Sunet

Sunet (Swedish University Computer Network) is part of the Swedish Research Council, and at the same time a research infrastructure that fulfils the needs for data communication and IT services of Swedish higher education institutions.

Responsible for the Swedish university data network

Sunet provides Swedish higher education institutions with data communications and services via a joint network. Some public authorities, museums and other public organisations are also connected to Sunet.

The joint network consists of 113 nodes that are linked by 126 different fibre sections consisting of more than 8 000 km of fibres. Large amounts of data are sent via this network every day within Sweden and out into the world via the corresponding research networks of other countries.

Part of a global research network

Sunet’s network is linked to the Nordic countries’ joint research network NORDUnet, which in turn is linked to the European research network GÉANT, and to other major research networks, such as those of USA, Canada and China.
Together, the research networks of all countries form a world-wide infrastructure for research and education.

Sunet and the university data network have existed since the early 1980s, and the Swedish Research Council has been responsible for the operation since 2001
