The Swedish Research Council’s executive management

Sven Stafström, Director General, directs the daily work of the Swedish Research Council together with Ann Fust, Executive Director. Our operation is divided into five departments, which you can read about here. We have three scientific councils, one council and five committees that decide on the allocation of research funds. The entire operation is headed by a board, which is appointed by higher education institutions and the Government.

The Director General heads the day-to-day work

Sven Stafström is the Director General of the Swedish Research Council and head of the public authority. He leads the day-to-day activities.

The Director General is appointed by the Government and decides on issues delegated to him by the Board. These issues may, for example, involve internal organisation, prioritisation of resources within the public authority or decisions relating to the funding of certain grants. The Director General is also in charge of our Secretaries General.

The Executive Director assists the Director General in his work

Ann Fust, Executive Director of the Swedish Research Council, is the deputy Director General and assists the Director General with heading the public authority.

The Executive Director is in charge of the Swedish Research Council's heads of department. She is also the head of the Department of Administration and holds HR responsibility for the Central Ethics Review Board.

The executive management team provides expertise and advice

There is an advisory executive management team that assists the Director General. The executive management team includes

  • the Director General (chair) and the Executive Director
  • our five Secretaries General
  • the heads of the Department of Research Policy, the Department of Research Funding, the Department of Administration, the Department of Research Infrastructures and the Department of Communications and Public Relations
  • the head of the Management Support and Coordination Unit at the Department of Administration

    The Swedish Research Council has the task of regulating both the rules that apply to research principals when agreeing to receive visiting researchers, and also the rules that apply to applications for ethical review of research involving humans.

    The Council for Register Data advises the Swedish Research Council on policy issues related to register-based research. The members of the Council represent the large register data owners and the research community.
