Matthias Marklund new Secretary General for Natural and Engineering Sciences

Matthias Marklund is Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Gothenburg, and has a great interest in strategic and research policy issues. In his new role, he wants to work towards greater collaboration between different actors within natural and engineering sciences.

The Swedish Research Council’s new Secretary General for Natural and Engineering Sciences is Mattias Marklund, who has been Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Gothenburg since 2019. His research fields cover plasma physics, particle acceleration, lasers and extremely strong light pulses.

“My relatively broad experience of natural sciences research, in both basic and applied research, is something that I think will be of benefit in my role as Secretary General. This is particularly the case in contacts with research environments and funding bodies, for example,” says Matthias Marklund.

“I also hope to have the opportunity to drive the issue of popularising science in other forums than purely academic ones.”

As Secretary General for Natural and Engineering Sciences, Mattias Marklund wants to find opportunities for more collaboration between different actors in Swedish research.

“The interplay between infrastructure investments and funding of individual research operations is interesting, in particular the role that universities can have in this.”

Matthias Marklund takes over as Secretary General for Natural and Engineering Sciences on 1 December 2020.


The Swedish Research Council has five secretaries general, each with a high level of scientific competence, who contribute knowledge and experience to the organisation

The secretaries general are part of the Swedish Research Council’s executive management team, and initiate, drive and follow up issues within their respective areas of expertise. The secretaries general are active researchers, and usually employed by the Swedish Research Council on a part-time basis for a maximum of six years.
