New office to coordinate inputs to ESS and MAX IV
During 2020, the Swedish Research Council and Vinnova will be establishing a joint office to work towards maximising Sweden’s use of the research facilities European Spallation Source, ESS, and Max IV in Lund.
The office is being established at the request of the Government, and the overriding aim is to maximise the benefit to Sweden by contributing an overall approach to the coordination of national inputs to the research facilities in Lund.
During 2020, the office will produce a national implementation plan together with actors in the area and those groups that in various ways will use and benefit from the facilities. The purpose of the implementation plan, which will extend up to 2028, is to unite around a set of common goals that have deadlines and can be followed up.

“This is a task that feels both exciting and important. The implementation plan gives us the opportunity to make inputs at the right time, and where they are needed the most,” says Mikaela Rapp, who is in charge of the new office.
Mikaela Rapp’s most recent position was at the Stockholm Science City foundation, where she worked to strengthen the ecosystem of the emerging life science cluster in the Hagastaden district of Stockholm. She also has many years’ experience as a researcher at large-scale research infrastructures, both in academia and in business. Since 16 March, she has been working on setting up the office together with personnel from both Vinnova and the Swedish Research Council.
“The initiatives in Lund are incredibly important, because they both enable world-class research, and also put Sweden on the map as a big science nation,” says Mikaela Rapp.
