Hackathon: New Digital Ideas to Counteract Antibiotic Resistance

On 13–15 December, the Swedish Research Council is co-organising the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR) event ‘Hacking AMR 2019’ together with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Norwegian Research Council (RCN). The aim is to engage digital capacities in the challenge of antibiotic resistance.

Participants from seventeen JPIAMR member countries meet this weekend to work together to produce innovative ideas to prevent and counteract the increase in resistant bacteria.
“It will be exciting to see what happens when researchers, IT developers, entrepreneurs and designers work together over a few intensive days. We look forward to new approaches and creative proposals for how digital tools can contribute to the work on antibiotics resistance,” says Jan-Ingvar Jönsson, Secretary General of Medicine and Health at the Swedish Research Council and Acting Chair JPIAMR.

Several JPIAMR member countries have provided travel awards to support their participants. At the event, over 50 people will participate, from various disciplines in science and the digital world. In the finale of this high intensity collaborative event the teams will present their solutions. A jury will name the team that presents the most interesting solution.
“If ideas emerge from this hackathon, with the potential to counteract antibiotic resistance, it would be amazing if they could be realized,” says Jan-Ingvar Jönsson.
